With the exception of Illinois, you can do this in the order that works best for you.
Ride alongs
General
How many ride-alongs do I get?
The number of ride-alongs received will vary based on your state. In most states, 3 ride-alongs are sufficient.
Do I have to complete my ride-alongs to be considered a certified home inspector?
The ride alongs are not mandatory; however, iGo highly recommends that you take advantage of the opportunity. Ride-alongs provide you with real-life experience and expectations. They also give you an opportunity to become familiar with the company that you are applying for and vice-versa. Companies have hired many iGo students based on feedback from the ride-along host inspector.
Do I meet the inspector and ride with them?
Once you accept a ride-along offer, a confirmation email will be sent to you with specific instructions, including the address. In most cases, you will be meeting the inspector at the inspection. This may change based on the home inspection company’s preferences.
Illinois
How many ride alongs will I get
Students in Illinois are required to complete 5 home inspections (ride-alongs.)
Students in Illinois must do 5 mock inspections and submit them in pdf form before they are officially considered a certified home inspector.
Ohio
How many ride alongs will I get
We are unable to offer any ride-alongs to Ohio students at this time.
How do I access support if I am taking the self-paced course?
First look through this FAQs page to see if you’re able to find an immediate answer. If not, submit a support request.
How long before I hear from the hiring agent after the intro email is sent?
Because iGo Academy strives to do our very best to make sure you have success in your newly chosen career, we will send an introductory email to the home inspection company that you’ve applied to once you’ve completed the course. Unfortunately, InspectionGo has no influence on who, or when, a home inspection company hires. iGo cannot guarantee employment with any home inspection company; however, we DO try to do all that we can to assist you in obtaining employment.
General questions
Does the 120 hours transfer, say if I’m moving from state to state?
If you are in a licensed state moving to another licensed state, you will need to contact the department of education for the state you are moving to determine what requirements are in place and if that state has any reciprocity with the state you are leaving. If you are in an unlicensed state moving to a licensed state, in most cases, you’ll be expected to complete all of the requirements for the state you are moving to. Again, check with the department of education.
What if I need to speak with the inspection company before I decide on classes?
An email can be sent (possibly through membercare) to the HICO requesting they contact the student. (Some type of information/introduction to the student should be shared with the HICO- resume etc)
What if I have questions about class topics?
You can ask questions in the Student group on the LMS Dashboard. They are usually reviewed and responded to within 24 hours.
Why should I work through the 40 hours of online material before class? What if I don’t?
The 40 hour online class helps prepare you for the virtual class; however, if you are unable to complete the forty hours online prior to class, that is ok. You can complete it during or after the virtual class at your convenience.
Does the class cover topics required for my state’s state-specific licensing exam?
The class follows the standards covered in the National Home Inspector Exam. This exam is recognized in all licensed states except one (North Carolina.) If you take another qualified exam, there will be significant overlap with the course materials.
I have a busy schedule, how will the ride-alongs be scheduled? What if I can only schedule weekends?
Once you successfully complete the course and have downloaded your course certificate, membercare will contact you to schedule your ride-alongs. Depending upon the schedule of the HICO, weekend ride alongs may be available (membercare will address this with the HICO.)
What other job opportunities are in my area?
The real estate market is extremely busy and many home inspection companies are hiring inspectors. You can do your own local research to determine if companies not partnered with iGO are hiring. Resources including indeed, zip recruiter, job boards and state/local inspection associations are a good place to start.
What is the typical amount of time between finishing the course and getting hired?
This question does not have a simple answer. Some students get hired right away (after completing the HICO selection process.) Other variables may impact hiring decisions like capacity, location and time of year.
How long does it typically take to be trained by the HIC and start inspecting on my own?
It depends on the HICO training program. Usually newly hired inspectors are expected to be ready to inspect on their own within six months.
How much can I make per inspection?
There is no set way to compensate inspectors. Some may get hourly pay, a salary, a percentage, commission or straight compensation per job to name a few. This is a question to ask the HICO you are looking to join during the selection process.
What kind of tools are provided?
Some companies will provide the basic tools needed to inspect- ladder, flashlight, outlet tester, screw driver. Some will provide specialized tools like infrared cameras and moisture meters. This is a question to ask the HICO you are looking to join during the selection process.
What does my schedule look like? Is it a 9 to 5 shift?
Normally an inspector can be scheduled for 2-3 inspections a day with the understanding that administration time will be needed between and after the inspections to get all the work done. Shifts begin with the inspection and end when all the required work is completed. It is not a 9-5 job and may include some weekend work depending on the HICO.
How are inspections handed out?
Some HICOs may email/text or use some other means to send the info to the inspector the day before; others may use an online system/calendar that the inspector accesses. This is a company specific question that will be answered during the selection/interview process.
How much does it slow down during winter?
This really depends on where you are located and the state of the market. Some markets stay busy year-round; others, due to extreme weather, may slow during the winter months.
